Henderson County (Dec 8, 2021) - Kanuga Conference Center is fighting the Henderson County tax collector’s decision to revoke its tax-exempt status, an action that could cost the Episcopal retreat more than $1 million if it stands.
Michelle Owens, a veteran tourism marketer with long-standing ties to Western North Carolina, has been named executive director of the Henderson County Tourism Development Authority.
Owens brings nearly two decades of marketing and tourism experience to her new role, including six years as executive director of the Rutherford County TDA from 2009 to 2015. She emerged from a field of 40 applicants to fill the opening created by the retirement of Beth Carden on March 31.
Owens takes the helm at a time of robust tourism activity in Hendersonville and Henderson County. New hotels and attractions are opening, and the county ranks 14th out of 100 counties in North Carolina with annual visitor spending of nearly $325 million.
Casar camp to honor its original namesake
A summer camp in Casar is inviting the community onto its grounds this spring to honor the family that made the camp possible.
Camp Tekoa Foothills, previously known as Camp Loy White, is hosting a memorial Loy White Weekend beginning 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15.
As a multi-generational operation, Camp Loy White positively impacted members of the Casar community for almost 60 years before it was gifted to Camp Tekoa, a Hendersonville-based unit in the United Methodist Camp and Retreat ministry.
Camp Loy White was created in the memory of Loy White, a teen who died in June 1961 in an accident. Following his death, members of the White family and some neighboring farmers donated land to create the 117-acre camp.
