Thousands gathered for a rally in Istanbul on Saturday to protest the conviction of leading Turkish opposition politician Canan Kaftancioglu for insulting
A row over the fate of Istanbul’s iconic Ataturk Airport has escalated in Turkey amid opposition claims that a plan to demolish the facility is designed to gratify Gulf investors interested in operating the city’s newer airport.
Hundreds of supporters of Turkey’s main opposition party have protested in Istanbul over a high court ruling that upheld a prominent opposition politician’s conviction on charges including insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The center-left Republican People’s Party, or CHP, said the ruling against Canan Kaftancioglu is politically motivated as she is considered the driving force behind the CHP victory in local elections in 2019. It also sees the court decision as an attempt to block her political rise ahead of elections next year. The party and other critics frequently question the independence of Turkey’s courts under Erdogan’s increasing authoritarian rule. Thursday’s protest was held outside the CHP Istanbul headquarters.
