Nicki Minaj and Tracy Chapman have reached a settlement in the copyright dispute that accused Minaj of sampling Chapman s 1988 song Baby Can I Hold You in the rapper s leaked track Sorry.
Chapman and her team accepted a $450,000 offer Thursday, which Minaj and her team finalized on Dec. 17, according to public court documents filed in a California federal court. This sum includes of all costs and attorney fees related to the case, and the dispute will not proceed to a trial.
Despite Judge Virginia Phillips ruling last September that Minaj did not commit copyright infringement when writing and recording Sorry, the settlement reflects a victory for Chapman in the suit.

For months, the entertainment industry’s legal calendar had an intriguing item on the horizon: a copyright trial pitting Tracy Chapman, the revered and reclusive singer-songwriter, against the firebrand rapper Nicki Minaj.
But that trial is not to be. Late last month, the parties agreed to a judgment of copyright infringement against Minaj, and a payment of $450,000 to Chapman, according to documents made public on Thursday in federal court in California, where the case was being adjudicated.

Nicki Minaj and Tracy Chapman’s copyright lawsuit has finally reached a settlement. According to Pitchfork, California court documents viewed by the publication revealed that Nicki will fork over $450,000 to the ’90s blues rock legend. The sum will also cover all legal expenses relating to the case.
Chapman originally filed the lawsuit in 2018 over the “Super Bass” rapper’s alleged illegal use of 1988’s “Baby Can I Hold You,” which Nicki sampled on “Sorry” featuring New York rap legend Nas. The track was originally leaked in 2018 by DJ Funk Flex when he played it on Hot 97.
Nicki intended for the song to land on her fourth studio album
