Neighbourhood Inspector Harninder Bola and Rev Canon Andrew Shipton with the recoverd crucifix A CHERISHED crucifix that was stolen from the remembrance garden of a Newcastle church has been returned to the parish after it was tracked down by police. Last Thursday the parish of All Saints Church in Gosforth were left horrified to find that the cross – that includes a bronzed sculpture of Jesus Christ – had been taken overnight by thieves. The sentimental bronze crucifix was erected in the church’s garden of remembrance in 1965 where the ashes of many loved ones have been scattered. Police immediately launched an investigation to try and identify those responsible for the theft of the cross, believed to be worth more than £20,000.

A sentimental crucifix that was stolen from the remembrance garden of a Newcastle church has been returned to the parish after it was tracked down in a scrapyard.
A crucifix stolen from the remembrance garden of a North East Church has been returned after being tracked down by police. The crucifix, which includes a bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ, was reported missing from All Saints Church in Gosforth on Thursday morning. The cross has been in the church’s garden of remembrance since 1965, where many have scattered the ashes of their loved ones. Police launched an investigation in the hope of identifying those responsible for the theft of the cross, believed to be worth more than £20,000. Thankfully, it was returned to the garden on Wednesday by Neighbourhood Inspector Harminder Bola, after a call responding to the police’s public appeal saying that the yard was being held at a scrap yard in Newcastle after being handed in by police.

He said: This is a highly sentimental piece of the remembrance garden at All Saints and the church and its congregation are understandably devastated. The crucifix watched over an area where the ashes of the community s loved ones have been scattered and these thieves have disturbed that area during their raid. Reputable scrap dealers will not accept this cross and we would ask the thieves to do the right thing and return it to the church and its congregation.
