here we have a situation how would you get on an airplane, what kind of an airport would allow you, what kind of a tsa system would permit you a passenger to get on a plane wearing an underwear bomb? is it feasible anywhere in the world to pull this off? to get through surveillance? that was part of the issue, is that when al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, when aqap claimed credit for the initial underwear bomb and the subsequent cargo bomb plot, they said very specifically that according to their estimates there was nothing in present airline security regulations that would be able to stop this. on a second occasion. it would all come down to intelligence. whether or not we would be able to identify the actual operative who is going to carry this out. and, in fact, you know, at least from the initial details in this latest plot, that sounds to be what happened. i think, you know, we re going to stand a much better chance of stopping this kind of thing if we try to tend toward f
tactically here. we have an underwear bomber attempt right now, much like the one over detroit, which was caught just in time, where actually that failed. here we have a situation how would you get on an airplane, what kind of an airport would allow you, what kind of a tsa system would permit you a passenger to get on a plane wearing an underwear bomb? is it feasible anywhere in the world to pull this off? to get through surveillance? that was part of the issue, is that when al qaeda in the arabian peninsula, when aqap claimed credit for the initial underwear bomb and the subsequent cargo bomb plot, they said very specifically that according to their estimates there was nothing in present airline security regulations that would be able to stop this. on a second occasion. it would all come down to intelligence. whether or not we would be able to identify the actual operative who is going to carry this out. and, in fact, you know, at least from the initial details in this latest pl
website. also killed was ibrahim ibrahim al asiri. i think it s interesting that ibrahim al asiri was killed along with these two. he was the mass officer boum making responsible for coming up with ideas like the cargo bomb plot and i think operationally, if that s true, that s very, very significant and it s a
game, as they need to do, and others are going to say, look at what a great idea you have just given to potential terrorists. how do you strike that fine line and walk it so carefully? it s difficult, but i think the bottom line is that people, our adversaries are quite inventive when it comes to operations. we just saw that with the cargo bomb plot a few weeks ago. if we re really worried about something, we should be worried about the prospect a similar plot is going to take place in another country. we ve prohibited the sending of packages from yemen to the united states. but al qaeda and the arabian peninsula has said, that s fine, we ll send it from another country next time. we need to look at a myriad of different threats. we re not necessarily giving them ideas. we re more reacting to the ideas that we see them coming up with. evan kohlman, many thanks. we also appreciate the background picture because it looks like where you are. happy holidays. thank you very much.
qaeda, anything like that. no. there is one issue that the swiss carried out a referendum on the banning of building new minoretts in switzerland land. it hasn t gotten the attention in the extremist community as, say, the cartoon controversy in denmark and sweden. so i really don t think al qaeda is looking to target switzerland and beyond that, the attack itself, the bomb was not very powerful. it doesn t look like it was designed for a mass casualty attack. it does not look like the work of al qaeda and yemen which was responsible for the cargo bomb plot a few weeks ago. so i think, yeah, the obvious suspect here is going to be the conspiracy to cells of fires and the mail bombing campaign last month. there are a lot of parallels here. it seems difficult to imagine that they are not connected.
