Any account of the rebellion must begin with an understanding of the grave injustices that occasioned it. To fund the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress and state governments printed paper money to pay soldiers, and to requisition goods from farmers and artisans. Since it had no backing in specie, the value of these government notes depreciated dramatically, giving speculators an opportunity to purchase large amounts for pennies on the dollar. Thus the notes, which were originally widely distributed among the populace, ended up the property of the wealthy few.
