PROTEST RALLY. Supporters of a mayoralty candidate in Mabinay, Negros Oriental stage a protest march early Tuesday (May 10, 2022). A police report said the rallyists raised issues such as "questionable" election processes, "anomalies", brownouts and minor glitches in the election proceedings. (Facebook screengrab) DUMAGUETE CITY - Police and military personnel are keeping an eye on a brewing tension in the municipality of Mabinay in Negros Oriental after thousands of protesters took to the streets on Tuesday to rally against a mayor making a comeback. Col. Germano Mallari, provincial police director of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO), told the Philippine News Agency that he has directed the town police chief to step up measures and vigilance to prevent violence from erupting as a result of the protest. Mallari said he also ordered the deployment of additional police personnel to Mabinay. "We are beefing up our forces there, together with the Army, to ensure a peaceful protest in the midst of the counting of votes following Monday's elections," he said. The rallyists, numbering about 2,000 early on in the day, were seen on a Facebook video post chanting, bearing placards, and walking around the town streets in a protest march. Some of their concerns include glitches or interruptions during the polling, brownouts, and "questionable" processes. They were earlier reported to be supporters of a mayoralty candidate, Carlo Ruiz, and are opposing Ernesto "Jango" Uy, who is making a comeback. Brig. Gen. Leonardo Pena, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, said as the day progressed, the number of protesters had already dwindled to about 200. Pena said the Army is just the "muscle" of the Philippine National Police, providing augmentation troops when necessary, as they do not have police power. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Mabinay is expected to finish the canvassing of votes before the day ends, with Uy leading the race. (PNA) }
