A GOVERNMENT move to extend the school day to help children catch up with learning after the Covid pandemic has divided parents and teachers across south Essex. Ministers are considering paying teachers to add an extra 30 minutes to the school day in England to help pupils overcome disruption caused by coronavirus. In an online poll on the Echo website, 39 per cent of people said they would agree with extending the school days while 60 per cent disagreed. Sue Jackson, headteacher of Lee Chapel School, in Basildon, backed the idea and outlined a similar initiative at her own school. She said: “I would be in favour of extending the school days to make sure the children can catch up.
