Winter is hard — and all too often, deadly for first responders. Since 1921, more than 40 Maryland state troopers have died in the line of duty throughout the calendar year.

Although Willis Zumbrun’s 1931 account mentions the only mills then functioning, traces of several other mills still dotted the landscape. Today only McKinstry’s Mill stands.

One of the worst Februarys in Carroll County history began Saturday, Feb. 12, 1899. The Blizzard of 1899 would later be referred to as the Great Arctic Outbreak of 1899 and the St. Valentine’s Day Blizzard. Nationally, the intense cold and snow impacted the population, infrastructure, and agriculture.
