Join members of the Leisure Hour Club at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, January 20 to learn about the exploits and travels of Rick Gunn, award winning photographer, writer adventurer and public speaker based at South Lake Tahoe, California, although he considers the world his home.
Carson City resident Maxine Hauser Nietz will share her love of space and her work with NASA during the Leisure Hour Club’s September meeting. The organization will begin its 124th year on Wednesday, Sept. 18 with Nietz’s presentation and a business meeting.
Luana Olsen, Director of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, will be the featured speaker to the Leisure Hour Club as the Club opens its 121th year. She will explore the history of the Museum and share information on its current activities and workshops.
On Wednesday, Sept. 20, author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will share her ‘life experiences’ related to growing up in the Nevada State Children’s Home. Located in Carson City, the facility provided a ‘home’ to hundreds of children, including Ms. Nishikawa and her brother and sister, between 1870 and 1992.
Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will share in the history of Laura D. Fair, Fatal Mistress. Four times married, twice widowed and twice divorced all by the age of 33, Laura Fair was the first woman in California sentenced to hang for the murder of her lover, Alexander Parker Crittenden in November of 1870.
On Wednesday, October 21, Jan Loverin, who has served as curator of the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russel Clothing and Textile Center for over 30 years, will share her extensive expertise on the ‘intimate’ history of men’s and women’s underwear with the Leisure Hour Club.
On Wednesday, April 19, the excitement of storytelling will be evident when local author William ‘Bill' Hill shares his craft and stories with members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. William Hill is a naturalized northern Nevadan, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and a product of many places and stories.
Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the current status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City.
