No. 9-ranked Lakeland traded haymakers with No. 3 Walled Lake Western for a half in Friday’s Lakes Valley Conference showdown for first place, but the defending champs scored before the break to take the lead, then rode its running game to five unanswered touchdowns in a 56-21 win.
Carter Travis got some playing time in the second half against Saginaw Heritage, a 48-24 loss, but last week was his first varsity start. This week, on the road, he improved to 2-0 leading the Eagles to an impressive 40-9 win over Walled Lake Central, accounting for four touchdowns.
