The Goldsboro City Council voted unanimously Monday for the Goldsboro Police Department to provide one school resource officer to Wayne County Public Schools as opposed to three. The resource officer will be assigned to Goldsboro High School and the Wayne School of Engineering, said Police Chief Mike West on Wednesday. Councilman Taj Polack made the motion, which was seconded by Councilman Gene Aycock. The vote followed a presentation by West who expressed staffing concerns. GPD for years has grappled with double-digit officer vacancies. “Unfortunately, I’m here before you to advise you that I am not sufficiently staffed at the Goldsboro Police Department to provide the three SROs to the Wayne County schools,” West said.
