Coming together for Campbell Sullivan: Photos from Wednesday s ski-down at Golden Peak

Sharon Schmidt/Special to the Daily Campbell Sullivan loved ski racing and cows and was beloved by so many for her courageous battle against a rare form of cancer and for her advocacy. The Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy alumnae and Ski and Snowboard Club Vail competitor died Monday, at 19, after a four year battle with CIC-DUX4 sarcoma. On Wednesday, at Golden Peak in Vail, where Sullivan had trained and raced for so many years, fellow competitors, coaches, friends and family gathered after an FIS women’s giant slalom to complete a ski-down to celebrate Sullivan’s life. Campbell’s mother, Gibby, wore a cow costume, along with a number of others. Gold is the international color for childhoood cancers, and every skier carried a yellow rose or a sunflower down the mountain before tossing them in the air at the finish area.

Vail racer Campbell Sullivan, resilient in battling rare form of cancer, dies at 19 After a four year battle with CIC-DUX4 sarcoma, Campbell Barrett Sullivan died Monday, Feb. 22, after suffering a brain hemorrhage brought on by the rare form of cancer. She was 19. A Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy alumna, Campbell created a nonprofit for other children with sarcomas, became an advocate for children’s cancer, marched on Washington, D.C. in support of funding for children’s cancer, was named an ambassador for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and never once lost her megawatt smile as she encouraged others. An avid ski racer, Campbell kept her passion for the sport thriving in herself and with her teammates. When she was too ill to race or train, she became a coach. When that proved beyond her capabilities, she went to the races to cheer for her teammates. When she couldn’t walk to the races, she was in her wheelchair.

Vail s Grand Hyatt launches Grand Gestures initiative

Special to the Daily Grand Hyatt Vail has launched a “Grand Gestures” initiative this winter to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes within the Vail Valley whose fundraising efforts were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grand Hyatt Vail’s winter Grand Gestures recipients include organizations supporting pediatric health, arts, culture, education and shelter, including Ski Fast Foundation, Vail Valley Foundation and Habitat for Humanity Vail Valley. “We know that many of our local charities haven’t been able to fundraise in their traditional ways during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we want to partner with them to help raise funds to support our community,” Ashley Okamura, director of events for Grand Hyatt Vail, said.
