Share Updated: 5:41 PM EDT May 2, 2021 Hide Transcript Show Transcript we're all dreaming of the day we can travel the world once again. But until then we're just gonna keep adding destinations to our list. So why not consider visiting some of the coolest castles from your favorite tv shows or even maybe spending the night in one of them joining us now to discuss the best castle tourist destinations MEREDITH Kerry, associate editor at Conde Nast Traveler MEREDITH Welcome brad and I are so excited about this subject, our knowledge is obviously very limited, so we're glad to have you on the show first. Tell us what makes castles so alluring to travelers. Well, aside from getting us one step closer from our fairytale fantasies, castles have some of the most incredible architecture, beautiful walkable gardens and views and are usually filled with art and maybe a ghost or two, but they also attract filming locations. Um, so they're in shows like you mentioned like Game of Thrones down, Abby Even Shonda Rhimes is upcoming netflix show Britain and as we've spent so much time this year, really consuming as much content as we possibly can. Our list of filming locations that we want to travel to are just growing and castles in the past have seen Huge influxes of tourists from shows. Thanks to outlander some of Scotland's sites, 50 increases in visitors. So they are excited as excited to have us come back as we are to visit them. I'm glad you mentioned some of those shows Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and some of those castles I always watched from the shows and just loved but people love to visit those places that they've seen on tv or in the movie. So what are some of the most famous castles that you actually can visit and not just watch on your screen? Well I'll give you three of my personal favorites. The first one is noise fun stain, which I'm sure I mispronounced but it is about an hour and a half outside of Munich. In Germany. It's actually great stop on a Bavarian road trip that we have on our sightseeing traveler dot com. And it was actually rumored to be the inspiration for Disney's sleeping beauty and you showed up before the break and it is absolutely stunning. It is up on this hill and sometimes the bowl around it will fill with clouds so it looks like it is um up in the air and you really feel like you're edit Disney fairytale. Another of my favorites is probably the most modern classic of all the castles, which is high, clear class. Excuse me, Highclere Castle, um which is in Downton Abbey. It's about an hour and a half outside of London. And well you can't stay there because the family actually still lives there. You can visit and explore all of the main staterooms and the servants quarters that were used in the show. And my new favorite is Castle Howard. Which is also in the U. K. Which is absolutely stunning. And when it was first built it was actually bigger than the royal residence. Uh It was used in sets in Brideshead revisited and in the show victoria but it will be in the upcoming Shonda Rhimes netflix show that I mentioned Bridger Dayton. It is absolutely breathtaking and every time I see it on screen I just my jaw drops. You know I saw a few episodes of victoria and remember thinking how beautiful that castle was. So I will definitely maybe I give that show another chance. So how did these destinations actually benefit from having travelers visit these famous castles? So a lot of times that money the money that comes from visitors is what goes into restoring parts of the castles that haven't been seen by the public yet. Uh, they keep them in shape for all of the tourists that are to come and make sure that their grounds are protected and still going to sustain the test of time that they already have because many of them are hundreds and hundreds of your old years old. So they're, your support really helps keep them in modern shape so that you can continue to visit them and they can continue to service film sets. That makes a lot of sense. You mentioned what castles we can visit, what castles can we actually spend the night in and more importantly, MEREDITH, I am curious how much would you stay like that cost? So one of our favorites and our readers favorites that is consistently on the Communist traveler Reader's Choice award is Dromoland Castle in Ireland. Uh, it was originally built in the 18 hundreds and kind of recently underwent a $23 million renovation to not only restore the rooms But also upgrade the amenities so you can explore the 18 hole golf course, you can do falconry, you can walk through the forest there, pony rides, clay, shooting, fishing, you can really do it all at this castle and as far as cost. Uh it is between about 412 $100 a night depending on what type of room you want to stay in. And I can tell you it is well worth the money. 400 to 1200 a night. Yeah, I'm sure it is. And I'm sure you got my colleague brad smith at the golf course. Really interesting to talk to MEREDITH carry. Associate editor of Conde Nast traveler. I will check out your suggestions. MEREDITH, thank you so much for being on
