Deadman’s Bay sounds like something from a far-fetched pirate’s tale but for centuries the small stretch of Plymouth shoreline was the graveyard of hundreds of ships.
Unremarkable and largely-forgotten now, vessels under sail were swept on to the coast in the 1700s and 1800s, reportedly 25 during a single stormy day.
The carnage grew as Plymouth and its neighbours Stonehouse and Devonport grew from into one city and home to one of Britain’s biggest Royal Navy bases.
