SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR/OSLO (Reuters) -Malaysian telecoms firm Axiata Group Bhd and Norway’s Telenor ASA are in advanced discussions to merge their Malaysian mobile operations, the firms said on Thursday.

Both companies said they were discussing the merger of the telco operations of Celcom Axiata Berhad and Digi.Com Bhd, in which the parties would have equal ownership estimated at 33.1% each.
Malaysian institutional investors would own at least 17.9% of the shares in the new company, ensuring that the overall local ownership exceeded 51%, Axiata said.
The company would be called Celcom Digi Bhd.
Reuters reported earlier on Thursday that Axiata and Telenor were set to announce a deal involving the Malaysian mobile operations of both firms.

Kuala Lumpur: B40 students from 30 People’s Housing Projects (PPRs) in nine states will now be able to enjoy free WiFi under Celcom Home Wireless service for home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) session until April 30 following the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom), in a statement Monday, said the initiative primarily targeted at students sitting for SPM and STPM exams residing at PPRs in Penang, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Sabah.
“The service enables unlimited data usage for learning applications and online classroom sessions via Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom and Webex,” it said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 As Chinese New Year celebrations are restricted during this movement control order (MCO), Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom) announced that they will be hosting a virtual potluck event.
The event, ‘Chinese New Year Grand Union’, aims to leverage the use of technology to recreate festivities and joys of the Lunar New Year in a safe space.
