Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner s police reforms include changes he hopes will increase community engagement. Turner announced today Prairie View A&M Ruth J. Simmons Center For Race and Justice s will be doing major outreach to people on police issues. Other changes include letting people submit police complaints online and through community groups like the NAACP and LULAC. The Independent Police Officer Board is being restructured and given a full-time paid investigative staff in hopes of providing more accountability. The changes are being done after recommendations from the Mayor s Task Force on Policing Reform. Turner noted he s hoping the Texas Legislature will start providing more mental health funding to help people with issues not get into a crisis.
