More supports for sexual violence victims in rural Alberta

Alberta invests in supports for rural sexual violence survivors

EDMONTON, AB – The provincial government is making an investment to support survivors of rural sexual violence. The $1.2 million in funding will help bring new services like counselling, crisis response and outreach supports to rural communities in Alberta, where those types of supports are currently not available. Minister of Community and Social Services Rajan Sawhney said that, “survivors of sexual violence deserve dignified and compassionate front-line service regardless of where they live in the province.” “This funding will not only help ensure people in rural Alberta have access to these critical supports, but it will also offer hope of recovery for victims of abuse.”

Alberta addressing shadow pandemic

Alberta addressing shadow pandemic Yes By Letter to the Editor on April 22, 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has left a devastating mark on communities across the province. Daily, we are reminded of the importance to remain vigilant and safe by complying with public health measures. While this is helping fight the spread of COVID-19, this inevitable isolation is leading to increased rates of domestic violence. The United Nations has deemed this worldwide spike a “shadow pandemic.” In Alberta and around the world, we are facing a tragic wave of increased violence. We are taking action in Alberta. In fact, we are leading the way with domestic violence prevention practices.
