The Winter session of the UP Legislature on Thursday got off to a stormy start with the opposition disrupting the proceedings on power tariff and law and order issues, leading to adjournment of both the Assembly and the Council for the day.

Lucknow Jan 20: A portrait of Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar in the picture gallery of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council has sparked a row, with Congress MLC Deepak Singh raising an objection and writing a letter to the Chairman seeking its removal.
The portrait was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday. "The installation of the picture of Savarkarji along with that of great freedom fighters who withstood atrocities of the British and yet did not bow before them is an insult to all those who continued to bear all kind of tortures and kept fighting for independence," Singh said in the letter to Chairman Ramesh Yadav on Tuesday.

A Congress MLC in Uttar Pradesh has demanded that the portrait of Hindu Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar be removed from the picture gallery of the State Legislative Council saying that the installation of his frame next to those of freedom fighters amounted to an “insult” to them.
Savarkar, within months of being jailed, had written a letter of apology to the British and offered to express loyalty towards them in exchange for his release, Mr. Singh wrote in a letter to the chairperson of the council on Tuesday. The MLC is the leader of the Congress party in the Legislative Council.
