2021-04 - Prof Zeblon Vilakazi installed as 16th Wits Vice-Chancellor

29 April 2021 - Professor Zeblon Zenzele Vilakazi was installed as the 16th Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits University at a ceremony held at the Great Hall on Thursday. Wits has the opportunity to transcend many latitudes and ultimately to impact on society for good. This was the message delivered by the Wits VC at his installation. “The coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally altered our world, but it also provides Wits with a fortuitous moment to hit the reset button and to envision our moonshot that could dramatically change society for good,” said Vilakazi. “You do not usher in a vision in a moment of euphoria. You do it because the vision you are articulating is as important as the other challenges which must be overcome.”

25 June 2020 - Wits University Professor Zeblon Vilakazi appointed as the Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal from 1 January 2021 The Council of the University of the Witwatersrand today announced the appointment of Professor Zeblon Vilakazi as the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University from 1 January 2021. He takes the reins from Professor Adam Habib who leaves Wits at the end of the year to lead the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Professor Vilakazi is the current Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Postgraduate Studies at Wits. Under his leadership, Wits’ research output has more than doubled, with the University increasingly producing more research with impact. He is widely published (325 papers) and highly cited with an h-index of 70.
