A recently approved Senate bill pushing a 100% raise in public school teachers’ teaching supplies allowance starting in 2024 will be a "significant step" toward attaining students right to quality education, the Commission on Human Rights said.
Senate Bill 1964, which passed the Senate with 22 votes, pushes to hike the tax-free teaching allowance to P7,500 for school year 2023-2024 from the current P5,000 and P10,000 in succeeding school years.
The Senate of the Philippines on Monday unanimously approved a measure seeking to institutionalize and increase the teaching allowance for public school teachers or commonly known as “chalk allowance.” Under the measure, the teaching allowance will be gradually increased from the current P5,000 to P7,500 for school year 2023 to 2024; and to P10,000 for school year 2024-2025 onwards.
