Montreals new light-rail transit system shut down unexpectedly this morning on its first full day of operation. The Reseau express metropolitain, or REM, officially launched today for paying customers after more than 120,000 people rode the system for free over the weekend.

A section of Hwy. 417 is closed in both directions between Woodroffe Avenue and Greenbank Road until 5 a.m. on Monday for the installation of a new pedestrian bridge. Motorists are being warned to expect delays.

While the 1960s ushered in a new era of transit networks such as the Montreal métro, the 2010s and early 2020s have been marked by bad planning, stalled projects and cost overruns.
