Athing Mu, the 19-year-old phenom who turned pro last week after rewriting the collegiate record book in the 400 and 800 meters, won the women’s 800-meter final on June 27 at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.
Her time was a dazzling 1:56.07, which broke a 25-year-old Olympic Trials record and was the fastest time in the world so far this year. In the final 150 meters, she simply ran away from a world class field.
“It feels awesome,” Mu said in a virtual press conference after the race. “Honestly, I wanted to break some record. [Setting a PR] was already great. A 25-year-old record is really old. I knew it was within me. It’s great to have it.”
