Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Operation: The manual drilling of the collapsed tunnel will begin on Sunday

Rescuers are still struggling to reach the 41 construction workers almost two weeks after the 3 mile tunnel in Uttarakhand caved in.

The heavy machinery brought in to break through nearly 60 metres of debris was damaged and was being pulled out, officials said, adding that the last 10-15 metres will have to be broken with handheld power tools.

Saturday marked the 14th day since 41 labourers got trapped after a portion of an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Uttarakhand.

The NDMA member further said a very difficult operation is going on. Two methods are being used currently, but a third method that is drift method could also be used soon. Currently, 47-meter horizontal drilling has been completed, he said, adding the broken part of the auger machine has to be removed, and the drilled structure has to be kept stable.
