Rescue operations to evacuate 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhands Silkyara tunnel resumed on Thursday morning after an overnight hurdle delayed drilling by several hours. An iron mesh in the path of the drilling machine was removed, holding up the drilling through the 57-meter stretch of rubble of the collapsed section of the tunnel by six hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project in 2016. The project, called Char Dham Mahamarg, will comprise nearly 900 km of highways, including several bridges and tunnels, and will cost Rs 12,000 crore. The project had courted controversy due to concerns raised over building of roads in ecoologically fragile areas.

Families have faced an anxious wait through the night with ambulances on standby

The drilling work to pull out 41 trapped workers encountered obstacles, which resulted in a temporary stoppage of rescue efforts.

Crews worked through the night drilling through debris to reach the men trapped in the three-mile (4.5km) under-construction highway tunnel, located in northern region of Uttarakhand state, which caved in 11 days ago.
