Actress, Grace-Charis Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, surprised many when she took to social media to announce that she was changing her name which she had spent years building into a brand in the movie industry.
While many speculated on what could have informed her decision, the actress has told
Sunday Scoop that it was inspired by an encounter she had with God.
She said, “I did not just decide to change my name. I changed it because I had a divine encounter with God last year and He changed my name from Belinda to Grace. Personally, I had wanted to change my name some years ago. Belinda has diverse meanings. Some people say it means ‘beauty’, but Linda means serpent. So, Belinda literally means Beautiful Serpent. God knew everything from the beginning and He knows what’s best for me, so He decided to change my name.”

The actress recently announced this development on her Instagram page. Speaking at a press conference which held on the set of “Nollywood Queens” reality show during the week, Effah disclosed that she changed her name from Belinda Effah to Grace-Charis Bassey. According to the actress, her divine encounter with God prompted the name change. Her words; “I had to change my name and the only thing that can make me change my name will be the most supreme being which is God. A lot of people will not understand that. So I don’t bother to explain to people when they ask me why. On the 15th of August last year. I had a divine encounter with God to change my name to Grace. Nobody changed my name, God did.”
