Hubert humphrey of minnesota. This was only the second televised president ial primary debate in history. It took place at the wchs tv studios in charleston. Five weeks before the primary polls show senator kennedy trailing by 20 points. With West Virginia voters expressing concerns about his Roman Catholic religion. But senator kennedy was able to make the race about religious tolerance and the separation of church and state, and he won with 60 of the votes on his way to securing the nomination.
