CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) A West Virginia police chief says solving the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old high school student who played football and basketball is “priority No. 1” for his department.
Kelvin “K.J.” Taylor, who attended Capital High School, was gunned down Wednesday in Charleston, police told news outlets.
Police Chief James “Tyke” Hunt called the shooting a “senseless act” said he would pull out all stops to find out who was responsible.
The shooting left the entire community hurting, Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said during a Thursday news conference.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. The past year in the coronavirus pandemic has been a year of constant evolution for health department across West Virginia.
“In the beginning, it was monitoring, then we were doing surveillance and then testing and then we moved to vaccination,” said Howard Gamble, administrator for the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department.

“I think every time we moved to a different phase we looked back and said, ‘How has this gone? How did we make improvements? How can we make improvements? ”
Tuesday marked one year since Governor Jim Justice declared a State of Emergency for all 55 West Virginia counties because of the pandemic.
CHARLESTON â With President Joe Biden signing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan into law Thursday morning, an unprecedented wave of local-level funding will soon come crashing into the Mountain State.
On Friday, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and local leaders gathered at the old Kanawha County Courthouse to discuss the rollout of these funds, which will total more than $4 billion for West Virginia.
About $34.5 million will be dropping directly into Kanawha Countyâs bank account and more than $37.8 million will be deposited into the city of Charlestonâs account when the U.S. Treasury Department finalizes a release date for these funds. Manchin said the department will work on mobilizing these funds in the coming months, so there is no set date yet for this money to arrive.
