HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD: Barringer brings home the gold for Northwest

CONCORD – The mission was complete: Chaunesse Barringer was a state champion. Better than that, the Northwest Cabarrus junior was now a state record-holder, having won the 3A girls long jump title by flying a classification-best 19 feet, 1 inch at the N.C. High School Athletic Association track & field championships at Greensboro’s N.C. A&T State University Saturday. “She was just ecstatic,” recalled Northwest Cabarrus track coach Tyrone Pierce. “She had the big ol’ smile on her face. She said, ‘I did it, Coach! I did it! Then, there was the fact that players from both teams knew each other quite well, some of them former middle-school teammates who grew up zoned to play for Northwest but were rezoned for West Cabarrus when the new school opened this academic year.
