Welcome back. i am kim brunhuber in atlanta. in the coming hours, the presidents of the u.s. and china will speak by phone. it is the first time the two have spoken since russia invaded ukraine and there is worry at the white house that chinese president xi jinping will take up russias request for help in the war. kristie lu stout joins us live from hong kong with what we can expect in the next few hours. so, the two leaders will speak for the first time as i said since the invasion, so how is t...

Well-known ukrainian intellectual who has taken up arms to fight the russians, as well as bandages to heal the wounded. and ive talked to the "new york times" moscow bureau chief about putins crackdown on the free press and what russians think of putins war. and paul krugman on whether china can or will save russias economy. but first, here is my take, russias invasion of ukraine is a seismic event, perhaps the most significant one in international life since the fall of the berlin war wall. thi...

Trapped on side and there are ongoing efforts to free them from there. mariupol, the port city that would connect ultimately crimea to the eastern regions of donetsk and luhansk, that hasnt stopped them from continuing on other fronts in this war. whether its kyiv where were seeing many refugees -- excuse me, internally displaced people flee here to lviv, or elsewhere in the east and in the south of the country. whats interesting, i guess you could say, strange, almost bewildering is life goes o...

Believed that the ukrainians were not going to resist this and it was going to be an easy operation, the fact there was not going to be a consequence from the international community. those are all fundamentally wrong. he was trained in a particular way. we also need to recognize this is a man that sits a football field away from his closest advisers because he doesnt want to get sick. the russians have families too. they dont want to engage in a mutual destruction either. again, bogged down in ...

Law. so the point is punishing it and throwing it away from those normal relations with the world is only rational because, again, to not punish such actions is to show the world you can act in this manner and this shall reverberate around the world. >> the reports are coming in about the number of civilians killed. i think its 21 civilians including two children killed in the russian air strike that was in sumy. i want to ask you do you believe this is war crimes? >> these are all extremely rem...

Of russian soldiers began to protest, the russian people were very sensitive, very concerned, and there is a sense that russian people do not want to be fighting against fellow ukrainians. and yet i think what he also detected is when he annexed crimea in a peaceful way, that struck a nerve within russians. i think he was using the celebration of crimea to try to focus and rally public opinion having to bus people into this rally no doubt as we saw from some of the coverage, because he is concer...

Weapons, something the white house and lawmakers are talking about. the question is whether it changes anything. we saw volodymyr zelenskyy give an historic address to lawmakers, where the president afterwards called putin a war criminal. but it didnt actually change the u.s. policy toward ukraine. so while chemical weapons would be heartbreaking, while seeing even more people fleeing, even more people hurt would be hard. i dont get a sense from my sources at the white house that, in fact, that ...

The conflict now. highlighting one of the reasons the russian invasion is stalling and thats a lack of logistic cal support. resupplying troops with food and fuel. is that what youre seeing and why would that be? >> for years we have been watching the russians modernize their military. since the disasterous outing in the 1994 chechen war. the wars in syria where they used syria as a battle lab to try techniques and technology. here we get to ukraine in 2022, and it seems like they learned nothin...

Every day i got a lot of calls, a lot of information, ambulances were shot, the child was killed, the small girl lost their arms and finally today just a couple of hours ago they killed american journalist near irpin. he was born february 10th, 1971, a guy like me, my age, and another journalist was wounded and my team treated him and delivered him to the hospital. so it is something i have not seen. what i could compare it is nazi forces. no rule of war. no any humanity. no any -- they are not ...

Him at all? >> look, i think we have to understand this is a leader who has been acting as a war criminal throughout his reign. he rose to power by helping to orchestrate the bombing of two apartment buildings in moscow, killing hundreds of his own citizens as a prelude to the chechen war, the second chechen war where he leveled grozny. this has been consistent. we have to understand that vladimir putins rise is really the story of a kgb takeover of russias failed democratic transition. and that...
