One way to get parents talking is to ask them how they feel about Elf on the Shelf. The idea is parents buy a book and doll called Elf on the Shelf, and then move it around their house in the days leading up to Christmas for their kids to find. Chelsea and Matt Hightower of Overland Park, Missouri were doing just that with their three elves: Jingle, Belle, and Magic. The day before the incident, the elves had been set up inside the refrigerator, so they were moved into the toaster oven along with a sign reading, “It’s A Lot Toastier In Here!” and they sat around a toasted bun, wrapped in paper towel blankets. Chelsea left the house and soon got a call from her husband saying he accidentally cooked the elves in the toaster oven. Chelsea managed to find identical replacement elves, and they told their kids the elves were taken to an “Elfspital” where they recovered from their injuries. Parents who didn’t conveniently have their elves quarantine upon arrival from the North Pole missed out on avoiding 14 days of “Elf on the Shelf” displays, something this father is surely regretting now.
On Day 11 of the elves’ magical trip around the Hightower family’s home, things took a tragic turn when father Matt Hightower forgot about the elves’ creative placement in the oven.
According to his wife, Chelsea Hightower, the elves decided to get toasty after spending the previous day in the refrigerator, The Kansas City Star reports.
