Grand Prairie Police to host free summer camps for kids
The camps aim to help families during a tough year while building relationships with the community.

Grand Prairie Police Officer Wesley Jackson was on patrol during the COVID-19 pandemic when he came across some kids playing at a recreation center.
That moment gave Jackson the idea for the department’s first-ever summer camp.
“Kids have had a tough time during the pandemic,” Jackson said, explaining his thought process. “What if we could do something to help families while at the same time build relationships with these kids?”
Kretz is one of the few in her neighborhood who has power at her home, and she was happy to help.
A few hours later when she returned the phone to her neighbors, she learned just how tough it was on them. I turn around and they re sitting in their car warming up, she said. I heard a humming sound and could see steam coming from the back of the car. He gets out and says, Hey, Chelsea, we re warming up in here.
Kretz wasn t having that and quickly made them an offer she was glad they didn t refuse.
A grand jury has indicted an 18-year-old on a capital murder charge in the killing of actor Eddie Hassell during a carjacking in suburban Dallas.
D’Jon Antone, who lives in Dallas, was indicted Wednesday, Anna Tinsley Williams, the Communications Officer for Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, confirmed to USA TODAY Friday.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News report that Antone was arrested in November, just days after Hassell was fatally shot in Grand Prairie, Texas.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Grand Prairie Police Department for comment.
Hassell, who was born in Corsicana, Texas, was known for his roles in the NBC show “Surface” and the 2010 film “The Kids Are All Right.” Hassell was living in Waco but had been staying with a woman at an apartment in Grand Prairie, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Vehicle pursuit, standoff lead to temporary shutdown of Interstate 20 early Friday
The vehicle came to a stop near Interstate 20 and Polk Street, and the driver refused to exit the vehicle, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

A vehicle pursuit followed by a standoff early Friday led to the temporary shutdown of Interstate 20, near Interstate 35E.
Around 9 a.m. Friday, Grand Prairie police were in pursuit of a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop, according to the department’s spokeswoman, Chelsea Kretz.
