Dinosaur National Monument is an excellent place to visit. The quarry there probably has the best in situ displays of dinosaur fossils in the world as this one dinosaur-rich layer is now exposed vertically. Flaming Gorge is also scenic and will take you into Wyoming. My favorite town in Wyoming is Pinedale, which would be somewhat of a detour for you, and one of my favorite national park system sites is Fossil Butte National Monument, great for the fossils, but it's nice for its isolated nature in the high Wyoming desert with few tourists and an abundance of present day wildlife to accompany those excellent fossils from the past. For a little history, South Pass, where the Oregon Trail crossed the Continental Divide.
