Magnus Carlsen suffered a shock defeat to long-time second GM Laurent Fressinet but roared back to secure qualification for Division I in the Champions Chess Tourโs upcoming Aimchess Rapid event. Joining Carlsen in the top tier will be Levon Aronian, Wesley So, and the Venezuelan-born Spanish Eduardo Iturrizaga who all progressed through a challenging Swiss event before winning their respective rapid matches against other top-eight finishers.

Nodirbek Abdusattorov continues to impress in the ChessKid Cup: he defeated Jorden Van Foreest in the final of the Winner's Bracket to qualify for the Grand Final, where he will meet the winner of the Loser's Bracket. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (picture) and Jorden Van Foreest are in the final of the Winner's Bracket of the ChessKid Cup. In the semi-finals Abdusattorov beat Fabiano Caruana and Van Foreest won against Dmitrij Kollars, who missed a number of good chances. Round 6 of the Sharjah Masters saw Dommaraju Gukesh taking down former sole leader Haik Martirosyan with the white pieces. Sam Sevian and Grigoriy Oparin also won on Monday and are now sharing the lead with Gukesh. Day 1 of the ChessKid Cup, a double elimination rapid (15+3) tournament, brought two big surprises: Alireza Firouzja lost his match against Dmitrij Kollars and Hikaru Nakamura lost against Jorden Van Foreest.
