MBE for charity founder whose efforts have improved lives for thousands in rural Zambia I am of course delighted to receive this recognition, which is a reflection of the hard work by a great many people both in Zambia and the UK. 7 January 2021 One of the eagerly awaited occasions at this time of year is the new year’s honours list and amongst the Surrey names for 2021 is Patricia Napier who has been awarded an MBE for her work with communities in Zambia. Patricia, who lives near Rudgwick, Surrey, with her husband, Robert Napier, first worked in Zambia fifty years ago as a VSO volunteer and later established a charity whose aim has been to improve lives in remote areas, an aim that has certainly been accomplished having changed the lives of thousands of people and provided a better future for generations to come in 18 rural communities.

Dr Chitalu Chilufya MINISTER of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya says the country has almost tripled the number of COVID-19 cases from 295 reported last week to 620 new cases in the last seven days. Speaking during the weekly COVID-19 update, Dr Chilufya said the country was experiencing a second wave of the pandemic. “Country men and women, it is very clear that the second wave is here. We had reported only 295 last Wednesday in the update in the previous week but this week, we report on 620 new cases. This week, we reported increased number of cases that are severely ill in our hospitals. There is adequate evidence for us to conclude that we are in the second wave. The possibility of mutation of the virus we have been seeing here, different from the strains we see in South Africa, in the UK. This is the reason why our professionals are alert and working hard to do genomic sequencing to ensure that we determine the strain that we are having in the second wave,” Dr Chilufya said.

Zambia : USAID to support 10 000 farmers to increase their productivity and incomes

Ten thousand emerging farmers are earmarked to receive support to increase their productivity, incomes, and sustainable farming practices under a new project spearheaded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Corteva Agriscience, Global Communities, and John Deere. The development is a result of a Zambia Emerging Partnership whose objective is to transform Zambia’s largely subsistence sector through the commercialization of emerging farmers. The three-year project will leverage more than K777 million (US$37 million) in loans for inputs and equipment, resulting in more than 50,000 hectares of crops planted using climate-adaptive seeds and other sustainable technologies.
