( Courtesy of Justin Hershey) On a rainy afternoon last August, Justin Hershey was getting ready to lay down for a nap at his place in downtown Staunton a small city west of Charlottesville in the Shenandoah Valley. He’d noticed the gutters outside his home were struggling to keep up with the rain coming down, so he called the staff at his nearby restaurant, Chicano Boy Taco, to check in. They said things were going fine.

Staunton non-profit among 28 community housing groups getting VHTF money

The first apartments opened in 2007. Valley Supportive Housing which now has 38 affordable supportive apartments. The VHTF is coordinated through the state Department of Housing and Community Development. In the current fiscal year, more than $55 million was invested into it by the General Assembly, and Northam has proposed upping that to $70.7 million. It is designed to finance affordable-housing initiatives supporting low- and moderate-income families, and homeless-reduction grants. The process for obtaining VHTF financing is competitive. According to Northam s office, 43 applications were received for this round of funding. Funding was also granted to programs in Petersburg, Richmond, Newport News and Northern Virginia, among others.

Waynesboro man arrested following chase

WAYNESBORO - An Augusta County Sheriff s Office deputy has been placed on leave after accidentally discharging his firearm following the arrest of a suspect early Sunday morning, according to a press release. On Sunday, shortly after 1 a.m., a deputy attempted to stop a 2010 Audi SUV on Jefferson Highway near Lifecore Drive in Fishersville after the suspect s SUV was allegedly clocked at 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, the sheriff s office said. The driver reportedly refused to stop. He proceeded onto Interstate 81 north before getting off the interstate at exit 225 and heading east toward Hermitage Road. The Waynesboro Police Department was asked to assist with the pursuit and deployed a tire-deflation device as the SUV entered the city limits. Several tires on the SUV were deflated but the driver continued to elude law enforcement, the press release said.
