The Concord City Council Chambers were somber Thursday evening as Concord Police  Chief Gary Gacek presented the Medal of Valor and Purple Heart awards.Â
In honor of National Police Week, Gacek presented the Medal of Valor award and Purple Heart award to Haylee Shuping, on behalf of her husband, Officer Jason Shuping.
Shuping died after being shot while responding to a report of a crash December 16, 2020. Officer Kaleb Robinson, Shuping's partner was also shot and wounded during the incident and is said to have shielded Shuping with his body once Shuping was down.Â
At the presentation Thursday evening, other city officials, county officials, private business and other law enforcement officers were recognized for their actions and support of Concord Police Department following the death of Jason Shuping.Â

CONCORD, N.C. (The Charlotte Observer) - Ronnie Long on Monday filed his IOU to the City of Concord for the 44 years he spent in prison for a crime he says he did not commit.
Long, a Concord native, is not offering a hometown discount.

In a lawsuit filed in the Raleigh federal courts, Long is demanding that the city and a group of its current and former law enforcement officers pay for what his complaint describes as a corrupt investigation and cover-up that led to Longâs 1976 rape conviction and 80-year prison sentence.

The suspect, who Concord police said was armed, also died. The second officer involved was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Jason Shuping, 25, was the officer killed. Shuping had been with the department since 2019 and was a 2014 graduate of East Rowan High School in nearby Granite Quarry.
"Officer Jason Shuping served the citizens of Concord and the Concord Police Department since 2019," read a statement released by the department on social media. " He will truly be missed by all."
