Kewanee City Council accepts low bid from nonlocal contractor

Kewanee City Council accepts low bid from nonlocal contractor Mike Berry The Star Courier KEWANEE The City Council Monday accepted the bid of a Macomb contractor for sidewalk work, but it took the action somewhat reluctantly. Laverdiere Construction of Macomb bid $130,146 to do the work. Ratliff Brothers of Kewanee bid $137,436 for the job. The work involves building handicap-accessible sidewalk approaches to intersections where streets will be resurfaced this year. Most of the jobs will be in the downtown area, City Manager Gary Bradley said. Mayor Gary Moore said he had “mixed emotions” about accepting the bid of an out-of-town contractor over a local company, especially when the bid amounts were so close.

Residents offer annual criticisms of city potholes

Residents offer annual criticisms of city potholes MIKE BERRY The Star Courier Along with the return of the robins and hummingbirds to Kewanee, spring is the season for potholes to appear in local streets. This spring is no exception, and so many holes have appeared in local roads that at least one City Council member has heard from a number of residents about the problem. There have been so many calls that “I’ve considered turning my phone off,” Councilman Steve Faber said during last week’s council meeting. Faber has asked what city crews are doing about the pothole situation, and Public Works Director Kevin Newton said they’ve been busy throughout the city.
