Apr. 28—Two police organizations — National Coalition of Latino Officers and Pennsylvania Latino Officers Association — criticized the Reading Police Department's plan to eliminate college credit bonus for police department promotions. Richard Rivera, co-founder of the National Coalition of Latino Officers, questioned the need for the changes during public comment at Monday night's City .
A Reading man was jailed several hours after a police standoff in his estranged wifeâs home on the cityâs south side.
Police said he broke into the womanâs home near Sixth and Laurel streets and shot her in a leg while forcing her into a bathroom before the standoff.
Daniel Molina, 37, of the 300 block of South Fifth Street was jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail following arraignment before District Judge Stuart D. Kennedy in Reading Central Court.

Reading police gave this account:
About 12:30 p.m., the woman called 9-1-1 from her home after Molina, from whom she has been separated for four months, called her and threatened to hurt her. She said he had never been violent before and his words and tone scared her.
