The school district revealed that thousands of student records, including some of current students, were posted to the dark web as the result of a recent cyber attack. The information included driver’s license and social security numbers.

Rumors have spread online that the center will provide abortions. District staff, though, have been clear that the center is intended to offer support and information to students about substance use prevention, mental health and sexual health—but not abortions.

Long Beach will use funds from a nationwide settlement against opioid manufacturers and distributors toward a youth education and prevention campaign in partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District, among other harm reduction efforts.

With 20% of classes lacking central cooling systems, some parents have considered keeping their kids home or staging a walkout amid this week's heat wave.

LBUSD spokesperson Chris Eftychiou confirmed this week that the district will not require masks for students or employees to begin the school year.

Superintendent Jill Baker said the district did everything it could to plan for the return of students after their education was interrupted by a global pandemic. “But it wasn’t enough,” she said, adding this past school year was “rocky.”

This was the first closure of a district campus due to hand, foot and mouth disease in recent memory, according to an LBUSD spokesman.
