Lionel Richie was moved to tears by a 19-year-old singer Ronda Melton who persevered despite a hardscrabble past on Sunday's episode of American Idol.
Listening to Ronda Melton sing One Night Only from the musical Dreamgirls completely undid the four-time Grammy winner, 71, usually the least likely of the judges to cry.
It wasn't just Ronda's emotional vocals that turned Lionel into a wreck and caused him to lend her his handkerchief as he saw her starting to cry, too.

McGuckian was a bundle of nerves during the audition, which was her first real audition aside from qualifying for the nationally televised talent show.
She told the Independent Mail and The Greenville News last week that she had never really sung in front of an audience before and was nervous during the audition.
Her nerves came through clear on TV, and all three celebrity judges and the show’s host made a note of it.
After singing her piece - "Girl Crush" by Little Big Town - the judges talked about her great potential but worried about her nerves.

Christian McGuckian, a 21-year-old maid hailing from South Carolina, couldn't hide her stage nerves from the second she walked into the audition room. Before she started singing, Bryan even coached her through some quick breathing exercises, and Perry assured her, "We're all on your team."
Despite her nerves, McGuckian launched into a rendition of Little Big Town's chart-topping 2015 hit, "Girl Crush." While her performance wasn't perfect, the young singer's raw talent couldn't be denied, and it certainly wasn't lost on the three judges.
"You have magic country stuff going on in your voice," Bryan told McGuckian after she finished singing, "But you're letting everything around you get in its way. Understand? I would give anything in the world to get you to sing on time a little better. That is your biggest hurdle currently."
