After the publication of a salacious tell-all book, the remote city of Ilvernath is thrust into worldwide spotlight. Tourists, protesters, and reporters flock to its spellshops and ruins to witness an ancient curse unfold: every generation, seven families name a champion among them to compete in a tournament to the death. The winner awards their family exclusive control over the city’s high magick supply, the most powerful resource in the world.
I absolutely
love the woods. I grew up in a home surrounded by huge evergreens, and their roots burrowed into me at a young age. And while I found refuge in the trees as a child, I also developed a healthy respect for them I always had a sense there was more to the woods than the dense branches and swaying treetops and wild ferns.
There’s something about the way the woods teeter on the edge of peaceful and eerie that I can’t get enough of. The way a lovely afternoon stroll can turn frightening with the snap of a twig or the rustle of leaves. The way the shadows seem to keep secrets and the darkness awakens things that were dormant during the day.

American Gods, think
Daughter of Smoke and Bone. In these stories, there was magic here accessible through secret doorways or via enchanted trains or right in front of you, if you happened to get the glamour lifted. I think I loved these stories so much because they made me feel like the world was bigger than what I could see. Like magic might be out there for me, if I looked hard enough.
There are so many magnificent duologies on the shelves right now, and I can understand why. They’re bite sized and delicious, allowing a deeper look into the world and characters of your favorite fantasy without being so long that you need to invest years into a lengthy series before getting that satisfying ending.
Whether you’re new to duologies or are looking for your next read, I’ve got some recommendations for my recent favorites that I believe everyone should be reading and talking about!
