Morton, Groveland taking fire-costs dispute to ballot box

MORTON Only about 2% of the calls the Morton Fire Department responds to are in the Groveland Fire Protection District. But when district officials asked Dec. 7 for a reduction in the annual amount the district pays the village of Morton for fire and emergency medical services, citing financial shortfalls, the officials got some heat from the Village Board. This isn t the village s problem, said trustee Steve Leitch, who suggested the district put a tax increase referendum on the ballot. We shouldn t subsidize them, said trustee Ken Newman. Trustees voted 5-1 against the district s proposal to trim its annual payment to the village from 92.5% to 80% of its property tax revenue, about a $4,000 reduction in 2021. Only trustee Brad Menold supported the proposal.

hundreds of additional medical calls that dc fire e.m.s. officials attribute to the heat today. in this case it was a roofer who fainted on the job about an hour and a half ago just taken away to the hospital. reporter: disoriented but conscious and walking. coworkers brought this roofer down from the top of the old langley junior high building which is being rehabbed. they do roofing for a living. if it happens to them it could happen to you. reporter: witnesses said the roofer went into seizures and was near unconsciousness when coworkers called for help. i don t know what the temperature is outside. but it is probably about 50 degrees hotter up on top of that roof. reporter: elsewhere in northeast washington today paramedics were literally peeling people off the pavement. this man dropped while trying to cross the street while trying to call for help. humidity being like it is, all of a sudden. the man was given oxygen and i.v. fluids before being whisked away.
