Could South Medford receive a historic district designation focusing on its Italian-American heritage? It s something two Medford officials are proposing.
City Council President Richard Caraviello and Vice President Adam Knight on April 13 introduced a proposal for the Historic District Commission to study the idea.
“South Medford was a very vibrant Italian-American neighborhood,” Knight said. “It’s important we remember the roots of that neighborhood. This is a chance to capitalize on great history in Medford,” that might be documented through educational plaques and storyboards.
He noted many Italian-American families moved to the neighborhood from Boston’s North End and “you couldn’t walk through without hearing someone speak fluent Italian.”
