These app for controlling these generic-plus Wi-Fi smart home devices need more polish before we can fully recommend either of them.

NuWave OxyPure Smart Air Purifier Our COVID-obsessed world is bringing understandable new attention to an old technology: the air purifier. While dozens of units of varying sizes and capacities are available at retail, none is quite as advanced as the NuWave OxyPure, which I’ve been reviewing in my own home for a week. You needn’t even open the box to see that this is no questionably capable drop-shipped export. About the size of a small dorm refrigerator (and mounted on casters), th...

The Tailwind iQ3 has a lot in common with other smart garage door controllers on the market, but the promise of at least one unique feature—the ability to automatically open the door when you get home—caused this reviewer to perk up. Could this be the end of the tyranny of having to push buttons to open the garage door? I was excited to put the iQ3 to the test to find out. The hardware itself is unobtrusive and familiar: a small black box that sits near your garage door opener and connects ...

The sensor mounts to the wall via a mounting plate connected to the sensor via a ball-and-socket hinge, allowing for easy and flexible aiming. When the LED stops glowing, the MOV is gone and it’s time to replace the surge protector. Since you’ll most l...

Fingerprint-reading door locks aren’t known for their affordability, but startup BrillLock is aiming to change that with this new system, which recently completed a Kickstarter launch with more than $30,000 in backing. Although it’s a crowd-funded project (without even an official website as yet), the lock was sent to me for review in its reportedly finished, ready-to-ship form. TechHive doesn’t otherwise cover Kickstarter products. Before we dig into what it is and how it works, let’s ...

Belkin Wemo WiFi Smart Outdoor Plug Here’s the tl;dr on Wemo’s new outdoor smart plug: Skip it. Here’s why. Wemo is a longstanding and respected name in the smart home space, but the new Wemo WiFi Smart Outdoor Plug simply doesn’t do the brand—or existing Wemo users who want to extend their smart home into the yard—any favors. Let’s start with the hardware, which feels solid but is lacking in features. This review is part of TechHive’s coverage of the best smart plugs, wh...
