Pure winter magic. The Joffrey Ballet’s altogether unique production of “The Nutcracker,” has never looked more glorious or been danced more ideally.

The Broadway musical, “MJ,” with a book by Lynn Nottage and directed by Christopher Wheeldon, began previews Monday.

Myles Frost is making his Broadway debut at the Neil Simon Theatre. The musical is set in 1992 and features more than 25 of Michael Jackson’s songs.

Maybe it’s the post-lockdown malaise lifting, but Joffrey’s “Nutcracker” sparkles like never before: The colors seem brighter, the sets more immersive, the orchestrations richer, the story ever whimsical.

Carefully altered for its transplant to the Lyric Opera House, the holiday favorite still feels fresh and spontaneous.
