Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record City of Roswell employees are planning to spend $65,000 to continue city efforts to develop additional “wayfinding” signage to direct people to frequently visited services, areas and attractions. A pending agreement between the city and an Albuquerque architectural and design firm that goes by the name Groundwork Studio received preliminary approval during a Thursday meeting of the Roswell City Council Legal Committee. Councilors Jason Perry, Judy Stubbs, George Peterson and Barry Foster recommended the item for consideration by the entire City Council. It is scheduled to meet Feb. 11. Director of Public Affairs Juanita Jennings said that the governing body already had approved the request for proposals and the awarding of a contract, but she also wanted its authority to proceed with the legal agreement because the amount is more than $60,000.

The meeting got off to a contentious start as councilors and the mayor discussed for 45 minutes approving the agenda with items removed from the consent agenda, an amendment to place half of the items back on the consent agenda and the rules of order to do so. The consent agenda is used to approve in one action those items that are thought of as routine or non-controversial. Thursday’s consent agenda contained 12 items that had previously been before the various standing committees and the minutes from meetings in November and December.

Roswell turns out to view Christmas Star | Roswell Daily Record

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record Mostly clear skies and a wide view of the horizon brought a number of people Monday night to the west side of Cielo Grande Recreation Area to view a rare celestial event just after sunset. The orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, the largest planets in the solar system, have been moving closer together in Earth’s sky, something that happens about every 20 years, according to NASA. But Monday night, they appeared closer together than they have in nearly 400 years, seeming to form a single bright object in the sky. Sarah McArthur of Roswell and her son, Dylan, visiting from Albuquerque, were among those at the recreation area. They had set up a telescope that Sarah’s father had given them when Dylan was a boy, she said.
