Monmouth rescinds temporary outdoor seating arrangements

MONMOUTH The city of Monmouth will rescind temporary outdoor seating arrangements for bars and restaurants that have not obtained permanent permission through the city’s cafe ordinance. The temporary outdoor seating permits with more lenient application requirements were put in place last year to help businesses survive during the state COVID-19 shutdowns.  “Since we have returned to full indoor occupancy, I think we want to revisit that,” said City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher. The city’s temporary provisions were more lenient than the permanent cafe ordinances in terms of the use of sidewalks and parking spaces for outdoor seating. “We’re pulling back into what we would normally be doing during normal times,” Steinbrecher said.

An ordinance authorizing the sale of the property for $1 to Iceberg Development of LeClaire, Iowa, for the Monmouth Townhomes project was approved Monday by the City Council.  “This ordinance would allow us to proceed with the sale of the property,” said City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher.  A recent housing study showed rental units are in short supply in Monmouth.
