bridge. exclusively starts november seventh g w. this is d w news live from berlin germany pauses to honor the victims of kristallnacht. united not. a solid tribute to the victims of nazi persecution eighty years ago the nazis unleashed a night of terror on germany's jews a dark prelude to the holocaust chancellor merkel warning of resurgent anti-semitism. also coming up seeking safety in numbers as thousands of migrants fling violence and poverty make their way north to the u.s. they tell you firsthand of the dangers they're facing on the long journey. and a wall of fire puts countless lives at risk in california tens of thousands are fleeing fast moving wildfires there and officials warn the blazes are gaining strength. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us germany today is commemorating some of the most important historical events in the country's history chancellor angela merkel spoke at the country's largest synagogue in berlin on the eightieth anniversary of crystal knock known as the night of broken. yes on november ninth one thousand thirty eight the nazis and their supporters carried out nationwide attacks on the jewish population. as a prelude to the holocaust. or the chancellor said state authorities needed to take decisive action to combat racism and she stressed the importance of learning the lessons of history earlier lawmakers gathered in parliament to mark two other defining of vents the founding of the german republic on november ninth one thousand nine hundred and on the same date twenty nine years ago the fall of the berlin wall. let's hear more nor more now from chancellor merkel as she addressed members of germany's jewish community about the legacy of nazi terror the events of the rush cockcrow nine thousand nine hundred thirty eight were an important way point towards the great rupture of civilization which was the shoah leading to six million murdered jews and unspeakable suffering for many more millions of people. in all this suffering that define his words i'm ready to lock the words to describe it. we have family young from g.w. politics with us for more on this is that when we saw these events marking the so-called day of faith in germany marking several anniversaries in the parliament but also in the synagogue which i saw the chancellor speaking there what did you take away from these various commemorations today here i think you're all the speakers today have made it clear how present the history is and that's very important you know both the chancellor merkel and president in my earlier tracing the various lines of german history. mr steinmeier particularly focusing on nineteen eighteen one hundred years ago today when essentially germany's parliamentary democracy was founded the moment he was swept aside was the end of the say of the first world war and the chaos of that time but people had a new optimism and a new new hopes for the future in a new political order in germany and of course things didn't work out well that led to the viral republic which eventually sort of melted into the rise of the nazis but it's important to look back at that time he said as an indication of what germany can be of the pluralism of the openness that was represented even in those days and it's interesting that it wasn't you know why did the nazi pogroms against the jews in one hundred thirty eight why were they focused on this date as well not the ninth of november the answer is because the hitler himself and the nazis saw that date with this proclamation of a new germany as an offense to them and indeed five years later in nineteen twenty three. there had been an attempted putsch by hitler which we failed at that time so he felt that somehow you know he was in a battle to prove he's proved his improve the rise of the nazis as his vision of the future germany and so this date continues to carry this burden of you know what kind of a place huge. all the speakers today were making that point that that is the question we should have in our minds today even though history doesn't repeat itself there are trends there are narratives that we're seeing develop in german society again today in this need to be critically aware of history as he said so i mean we have a clip of chancellor merkel speaking about this. when he had to be critically aware of history does he not is a must and i quote professor novak trying historian this is something you don't just of you keep having to work out it's unique and it is in this sense that every generation and new needs to strive to obtain critically inform my relationship with our own past a small but five cents where ever this is possible historical commemoration is more than an empty ritual it will mean that history retains significance and new questions and perspectives could even be opened if you use them this idea of needing to be informed critically informed about germany's history is especially relevant this year as we're seeing anti-semitism and racism prejudice emerge again in german society absolutely and it's especially relevant as well because this may well be the last of these round number anniversaries of november nine hundred thirty eight when people who actually experienced it will be able to take part. but also talked about the only expected gift that is the resurgence of jewish life in germany but of course that gift has brought with it a renewed appearance of anti semitism and anger a miracle said you know discrimination of any kind against any group as such is always unacceptable and that's why it's good to remember she said you know because when we jointly remember we lift people out of the anonymity and the sort of generalized view and we give them back their dignity all right simon young from d.w. politics simon thank you very much. let's catch up now on some other stories making headlines around the world the so-called islamic state has said one of its fighters carried out a knife attack that left one person dead and two wounded in the australian city of melbourne the suspect drove a burning pickup truck onto a sidewalk before lashing out at pedestrians and officers trying to restrain him who was shot by police and later died in the hospital. members of the afghan government's peace council have met taliban officials at our conference in moscow they repeated couples called for peace talks without preconditions russian foreign minister sergei lavrov said the participation of both sides in the conference was an important step toward direct talks between them the u.s. says it will deny asylum to anyone caught entering the country outside official border crossings the trump administration says the measure will stop abuse of the immigration system it's expected to be challenged in court. when migrants making the long journey on foot to the u.s. from central america face many dangers along the way activists groups say up to thirty thousand have gone missing over the past decade our correspondent is on the road with the migrant caravan and he sent us this report. that water knows all too well that being kidnapped and then simply disappearing is the biggest danger a few years ago his brother disappeared as he made his second attempt to reach the u.s. . when yaml was on those all those he and we got as far as a child because he had met. him in the police caught me under the porta me back i want to honduras. it was i mean i went back again to look for him but there was nothing. around ninety members of the caravan currently making its way north are said to have disappeared after getting on to trucks the reports from various organizations have not yet been confirmed i am pompadour but i don't publish a conference there are differing accounts of the numbers missing your know when some sources say. this one hundred. dollars on the human rights or forty's are looking into this case i'm going to siena your model is stunning in this a gondola. it's feared that they may have been kidnapped and handed over to organized crime groups active in the area where they went missing. and now obvious in the caravan a spooked. when jovan lost sight of his two friends he thought he'd never see them again. you see it was for me because i was really worried they had disappeared and i would never hear from them again but we got separated while i was trying to find space on one of the vehicles i had no idea where they had gone. i'd say between ten and twenty thousand migrants have disappeared in the last ten years that's one reason why people are queuing to get into this tent inside they can call their families for free to reassure them that they're still ok and i mean we're counseling with our lawyer if you don't fall off the train you get run over by a truck you know. so no set us but it is it just we're told once everything here is that i mean no we were most afraid for the children. because of the dane. the people in the stadium divided register according to the region they came from that way they hope any disappearances will be noticed. that it's very dangerous travelling between mexico city and the us border we need to be well organized and able to look after each other we have to know about each other every individual every child. in the back up and so on i mean you're. all going to list crime is lying in white everywhere on the journey ahead the markets are at risk of kidnapping and blackmail. it whatever it is son asking us gamma criminals and the migrants with fake office software no necessity i mean they can then they're forcibly held. and subjected to human trafficking in another us guys when say. but even though they leave if that was the lament their. attempts to jump the migrants even take place within temporary accommodation in mexico city the president of the mexican federal human rights commission says migrants are often approached by people claiming to be officials. now people who feel that if anything no one had heard of the supposed organization. to leave they offered to take people in lauri's in groups of eighteen. north and over the border into the u.s. . and i think. the biggest concern for the people in the caravan is to avoid falling victim to criminals exploiting their desperation. rapidly moving wildfires have forced thousands of people to flee their homes in the u.s. state of california governor kava newsome has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas officials have warned the blazes are gaining strength and could rage for days. in this sleepy town of paradise all hell has broken loose wildfire sweeping through northern california engulf the town forcing its twenty seven thousand residents to flee. authorities estimate that around two thousand buildings were destroyed and strong winds whipped up the blaze . extremely hazardous lots of smoke dark devastation actually burning all throughout the town to be good to there for eighteen years and it looks like the fire came from. east enders came straight through town all the way to the west while the flames consume the homes residents john breaux is in a desperate bid to escape can find a spot to rapidly that families had no choice but to take roots are ready and bought up by fire the whole house is just going to. the store she said several firemen and residents were injured that have been no reported fatalities. long periods of drought have created tinderbox conditions along the fire to spread quickly the situation is unlikely to improve soon. the challenge also for us is that we are at the beginning of a significant santa ana wind event that will last a number of days right now we have somewhere between four and five hundred five firefighters on scene many more on request and will be coming in having bad escape with their lives residents are in for a shock when they return to find that paradise lost. one sports item for you a bar in minot defender jerome boa tang has been left off of the germany squad for this month's friendly with russia and the crucial nations league game with the netherlands the twenty fourteen world cup winner has struggled of late for his club and for the his national team a statement from the german f.a. said the thirty year old was being given a break after discussions with coach walking to germany need a on you 2. this is g.w. news coming to you live from berlin firefighters in california struggle to contain several wildfires the blaze ravaging northern california just wine country has doubled in size turning homes and wineries to ashes to separate fires in the los angeles area forces thousands to evacuate also coming up the british prime minister forced to renew his push for an election on december 12th spike parliament defeating his plan for an early bout this after the e.u. agrees to another breaks a delay which johnson says he doesn't. and the puppet show in indonesia inspiring kids to join the fight against plastic waste flowing into rivers says. hello i'm terry martin thanks for joining us firefighters in california are battling 2 massive blazes the extreme winds have been fanning the flames in a statewide emergency has been declared official say the fire ripping through northern california's wine country has now bubbled in size with nearly $200000.00 people under evacuation orders and further self another wildfire is threatening homes in the los angeles area some of las wealthiest residents including basketball star le bron james and even the terminator him self arnold schwarzenegger has been driven from their homes. their 405 freeway in los angeles the latest fronts in the california wildfires early monday morning a new fire broke out here sweeping through the hills. thousands of people were forced to flee as the fires scorched the wealthy west side of the city authorities urged residents to heed the warnings and get out. if you're in the mandatory evacuation zone and you're still there watching this you're an idiot get the hell out it's way too dangerous people that stay behind are just a danger in themselves and not helping the worst affected area is sonoma county in northern california 88000 homes here are in danger 4000 firefighters are battling to get the blaze under control but there is new hope after days of strong winds conditions have improved. but today's focus continues to be perimeter control and structure protection especially during this 24 hour window of opportunity we currently have with favorable weather conditions but time is of the essence forecasters are warning that this is just a brief rest bite wins us that's a pick up and fan the flames once more. we start to get ready for those another red flag event all right now it looks like that's going to start sometime mid day tuesday and pushes into wednesday morning so we've got a kind of a quiet 24 right now and then we're going to go into another critical period tuesday night into wednesday it's now a race against time a battle against the blazes before that next critical period begins. for the very latest let's cross over to jason kemp and don't you know he's a reporter with n.b.c. news radio and he joins us from los angeles thanks for being with us jason let's start with what's happening where you are in l.a. are plier fighters there any closer to getting that blaze under control. so right now the getting fire is only about 5 percent containment but what they're doing as we speak is hitting it with everything that they've got the brief window period where the winds are pretty still at the moment i was just outside and you can still smell the smoke you can still kind of taste it there's still ash falling from the sky but firefighters are definitely getting in there and they're using water dropping helicopters overnight and just hitting it with as much fluid as possible the get these flames out before the winds start to kick up later today but i gather that many homes are threatened by the l.a. fire including some belonging to celebrities what can you tell us about. these are multigrain multimillion dollar homes that are being threatened right now about $3000.00 people are under mandatory evacuation orders like you said including the bron james and arnold schwarzenegger those are just 2 of the celebrities that live in that area and that's really where kind of the elite live you know if you're in the bron james and i know it's more snow here you've got bucks for days so you're really looking at some some mentions that are being destroyed i think about 8 ohms have already been destroyed in that area due to the getty fire and firefighters are doing structure. assessments as they're able to get into some of the hot spots early yesterday they weren't able to get in and assess the damage because it was just too dangerous ok so that's the situation around l.a. what about further north in sonoma county what's the situation there. massive blaze massive fire 60 some odd 1000 acres have been completely destroyed it looks about like on 100 structures have been destroyed that includes 20 homes in the town of guyra still and then almost level that entire town very small town up there in sonoma county and this is just north of san francisco a very heavily wooded area so there's a lot of fuel and there's a lot of brush that is just going up in flames firefighters are trying again just like they are down here in southern california they do the same thing up in northern california using this time where the winds are really low and using every resource available jason do authorities know how these powers are being started. so it looks like a power company pacific gas and electric may be responsible for the cage fire that's burning up in sonoma county down here in san in california it looks like a tree branch may have been knocked off of the tree due to the i wins and it hit a power line and that's what started been getting fire now this is not been concerned but as of right now that's what they're looking at up north in p.g. and e. they've been responsible for several fires because their infrastructure is a 100 years old and it's just old it's antiquated and so when you get wind gusts of up to 809100 miles an hour in some spots it knocks these power lines off and they hit the vegetation and that's what sparks a grass fire then you've got a live fire and so power company has been shutting power after people and that's really getting people upset so today everybody's got power but that may change by about noon or so in northern california and definitely by early in the evening by for southern cal on chase and thank you very much for bringing us up to date that was reporter jason kemp and downey out in los angeles. now he said he'd rather die in a ditch than ask to delay briggs it but british prime minister boris johnson has now agreed to a brace of extension until january 31st he's also been trying to persuade parliament to agree to a snap election in december johnson lost that vote on monday but undeterred he will try again today to convince opposition parties to support a general election he's hoping to capitalize on public anger over breaks. can you that's the mason by the end of this week this was the day boris johnson he broke his pledge to deliver brags that by the end of october my job is to get us out on october 31st and that is what we believe we are not committing to all of us leaving the european union. all october that it was going to go and. there's lots of it turns out there were more than a few obstacles on the road to breaks it and plenty of the still ety outside and inside parliament. with a new parliament like no sooner had he agreed to delete of bragg's it then he was at the dispatch box pushing for a snap election process again or threats. by december to crow and then go to the people despite his pleas he couldn't muster anywhere near enough support because the majority required has not been reached for no use of it for the opposition an election is a gamble he would rather not take. thank you mr speaker. the reason i am so cautious is quite simply because i do not trust the prime minister he said unconvinced and undetailed johnson says he'll make a fresh attempt on tuesday. because because this house. any longer keep the country hostage millions of families and businesses cannot plan here as night fell it was a future that looted likely to involve a ballot box with hints that smaller opposition parties may be ready to back johnson's call in just hours the united kingdom could well be in campaign mode no s. no buts. some of the other stories making news around the world today authorities in hong kong have barred problem. democracy activists from running in next month's local elections wong says he's the only candidate who's been disqualified the electoral commission says his nomination is invalid. and the government protesters have again taken to the streets of the chilean capital santiago despite a cabinet shake up by president sebastian pinera police clashed with demonstrators in the city center near replaced a cabinet ministers in an effort to calm and rest that is left at least 17 people dead. and at least one person was killed and dozens more injured when a powerful earthquake struck the southern philippines several government residential buildings were badly damaged the philippines lies on the pacific ring of fire where most of the world's earthquakes take place. more than 20 climate change protesters have been arrested after attempting to blockade a mining conference in the australian city of melbourne police say 2 people were detained for attacking a patrol force demonstrators claim police were heavy handed. sports news now in the u.s. national women's team have confirmed blood co and don't know as their new head coach the macedonian born former pro brings plenty of experience having coached and won 2 championships in the national women's soccer league in the u.s. replaces jill ellis and will take charge of the team in november the u.s. born a record 4th world cup this past july 1st on and off these agendas qualifying for the upcoming summer olympics in tokyo. well staying with football tuesday sees the start of the 2nd round of the german cup fending champions by in munich with an all on fire robert travel to 2nd division both them while in an all 1st division encounter surprise squad 5 won't take on union berlin freiburg are flying high and currently in 3rd place in the league. there's a major problem piling up in indonesia plastic waste at the moment the country is 2nd only to china when it comes to don't think plastic trash into the world's oceans it ends up in rivers as well 4 of indonesia's rivers are among the 20 most polluted in the world many indonesians don't understand health damaging plastic waste can be for the environment now a group of performers is trying to change that. it's a tradition the indonesian puppet show but not quite the puppets used in this performance and made entirely out of trash and the puppet is at school children 11 year old yuan is one of them the show he and his friends are putting on is full of heroes and villains the baddie in this play plastic pollution burn lights. it is very helpful because it teaches us how we can reduce plastic waste at home and in the environment. the puppet tears have travelled to the capital jakarta from their home on the island of lombok their performance is meant to encourage the young audience to take action and make personal changes to help limit the trail of trash. talk about the ticket that small items of trash can pile up and become a much bigger problem therefore we encourage people to resolve problems in their own homes one of the ways is by turning waste into puppets. indonesia has been struggling to cope with the waste it produces much of which goes into landfill sites for the young pup it is there a treasure trove. they collect and sort through the waste in the neighborhood and then assemble and paint that puppets. they. put it on me. for us at sock puppets here school this is fun and we hope this can benefit many people and have an impact on our environment and the world's environment when you do media. was 7. in a country with a strong tradition of puppet theater could see if you can effective way to get their message across reduce your waste or try to recycle it in the creative way. just remember the top stories we're following for you here today on the thousands of firefighters are battling 2 massive blazes across california one is in west los angeles and the other is in sonoma county in northern california more than 200000 people there have been told to evacuate. and british prime minister boris johnson has lost the vote to hold an early election on december 12th to call
