He spent his career interpreting and preserving American Military history with the National Park service, the new york state government, Rensselaer County historical society, the Civil War Preservation trust, kentucky state parks and the u. S. Army. Do you think he is qualified to speak . He has written and spoken on various aspects of military history and leadership from 1775 to the present. He has published two books with the history press, the civil war at perryville and the Tullahoma Campaigns, and contributing to the emerging civil war bulldog and studied the 19411942 campaign released in late 2016. The National Park service until his retirement in 1995. Has published many books primarily related to the western fear of war and his three volume Campaign History of vicksburg which is viewed as a classic. In 2015 legislation was introduced to award him a congressional gold medal for his contributions to Civil War Preservation and history. So his talk today is recovering the uss cairo, right. When i arrive at vicksburg on a in 1966 i entered on duty at vicksburg. And after i had been there about a year the superintendent called me in, mr. Mcconhi. And say, ed, i want you to see if you can find the gun boat cairo. It was one of 7 casemented city series ironclads built by the United States
